The symptoms of your dog having anal gland problems are sliding and rubbing the hindquarters along the ground, or biting and licking around the tail. In some cases the dog will inflame the skin at the base of the tail until it becomes raw.(ouch !)
The anal glands are small pear-shaped sacs situated at each side of the anus just below the skin. They are scent glands and produce a foul smelling substance which is normally discharged through a small pore-like opening at each side of the rectum when the dog passes a bowel motion (having a pooh!!).
Soft motions (dog pooh!) caused by wrong / incorrect feeding can cause the glands to become filled up thus causing discomfort. This is because the anal sacks need a firm pooh to squeeze the sacks as the dog poohs.
The sacks can be emptied manually….preferably by a vet.. but i am sure the vet will show you how to do it if you think your brave enough !!
I personally don’t recommend it as it is is very difficult to hold the dog still whilst shoving your finger up its bum!!!.
