Any inflammation of the ear canal is termed as canker. There is also a form of gum disease which is described as mouth canker.Long haired breeds and dogs such as spaniels and poodles which have hanging earflaps, are especially prone to ear troubles.

Symptoms are shaking and scratching of ears with signs of inflammation. If the condition is advanced there is usually a distinctive and unpleasant smell from the ears.

Steves tip..” Sniff your dogs ears regularly”

The primary cause is often infection by an ear mite.

Treatment depends greatly on the extent of the damage to the sensitive skin in the ear. Some cases can be resistant to treatment and surgery may be required to help recovery.
